Do Himalayan salt lamps
absorb moisture?
Yes, they do. Many people ask “do Himalayan salt lamps absorb moisture?” – do salt lamps dissolve? Or do they melt? Why my salt lamp is melting, sweating, or leaking?
Do you know that salt is hygroscopic in nature? It means, salt has a moisture absorbing nature. It attracts and collects moisture from environment. Along with the moisture, all the impurities in the air also get trapped on the lamp’s surface. It is the moisture absorbed from the environment that causes the salt lamps to leak. Thus, nothing to worry about. This Himalayan salt lamps leaking is pretty normal.
Just like, you see your salt shakers tend to gather little moisture during summer. Similarly the Himalayan salt lamps absorb moisture and become damp. And again, due to this moisture absorbing function the Himalayan salt lamps purify the surrounding air!

How to prevent a Salt Lamp from absorbing moisture?
Well, definitely you need to know how to prevent a salt lamp from absorbing moisture. Or, do you how to stop salt lamps from leaking or crying? You can follow the following steps to avoid a Himalayan salt lamp leaking and damaging:
- In your house or office, there are certain places that are bound to be more moisture-prone. Avoid keeping your salt lamps around those places. For example, Kitchen, Bathrooms, Laundry areas, and Open Spaces.
- If your residence is in a place where the environment is mostly humid, you will have to bear with a crying and weeping salt lamp! But, don’t worry. If that’s the case, there are a few steps to follow in order to maintain your Himalayan salt lamps.
- The foremost, keep your salt lamps on all the time. It is ideal to keep the lamp turned on 245/7. But if that’s not possible in any case, keep the lamp on for the maximum possible hours a day. Doing so, the light bulb warms the salt lamp which causes the evaporation of moisture collected on the lamp’s surface.
- Use a higher-wattage bulb. Usually, the Himalayan salt lamps come with a 15 watts bulb. But ours export with higher wattage bulbs! 25-30 watts are good enough. This will help in keeping your salt lamps heated, hence no accumulated moisture will happen.
- Use a moisture absorber. It is also ideal to place something that absorbs moisture from the environment in the same place as the salt lamp.

How to Store Your Salt Lamp?
Well, it’s important to know how to clean and store your Himalayan salt lamp. If you are going away for a long time, or want to store your salt lamp, then you can take extra measures. These safety measures will ensure your salt lamp doesn’t absorb moisture and doesn’t leak or cry!
- Unplug your salt lamp carefully.
- Pull the electric cord (with bulb) out from the bottom.
- Thoroughly dry the lamp and its cord. If you are not sure about how to clean or dry your salt lamp, please read on it.
- Beware that the accumulated water from the salt lamp isn’t plain water. It is of course the salt water and it leaves behind salt crystals when it evaporates. So, you will also need to carefully wipe the furniture or any other surface that must have come in contact with this saltwater leaked from your salt lamp.
- Next, scrape off the base (regardless of its material) of your salt lamp. The water when evaporated leaves behind crystals here too. And, it might make your salt lamp look uneven or unfinished. Hence, use a little hard plastic tool to scrap off the salt crystals from the base. Never use metal too, as it might damage the salt lamp or its wooden or marble base.
- Another great tip! Just place your Himalayan salt lamp in a shallow dish. That will protect your valued furniture and other surfaces from getting damaged by the salt water dripping from your salt lamp. Just drain the accumulated salt water from the dish from time to time. Isn’t that a simple but value-added tip?
- At last, place a plastic bag over your salt lamp, tuck it under the base of the lamp, and make it air-tight. This will stop your salt lamp from leaking, or crying.
Okay, when you are back home, just open the plastic bag, put the cord and bulb back, and plug & play. Your salt lamp is simply back functioning.

How to clean your salt lamp?
To clean your Himalayan salt lamp, switch off the lamp and let it cool to room temperature. Take a damp microfiber cloth (not a wet one) and gently wipe the surface of the lamp to remove the dust or dirt. You can also choose a lint-free cloth to make sure no bits are left behind as the surface of the salt is rough. Finally switch on the lamp to remove any excess moisture and dry it out.

Do Himalayan salt lamps dehumidify?
Many people think of salt lamps as a natural dehumidifiers that can also reduce indoor humidity. But is this true? Let’s take a deeper look.
The simple answer is, yes they are. Salt is known as a natural moisture absorber. You have seen many times in your home that salt grains stick together if left in a salt shaker in humid weather. Why & How? Actually, the moisture-absorbing nature causes the grains to stick together.
Thus, the more effective natural dehumidifier would be the Salt Rocks. And we all know that every salt lamp is made of Himalayan rock salt.
Therefore, it’s safe to say that Himalayan salt lamps are natural dehumidifiers. They can help reduce moisture in the environment.
When we talk about dehumidifiers, we are referring to electrical appliances specifically designed to reduce or absorb the moisture of indoor air. Using these dehumidifiers we can control the humidity level as well.

Himalayan Salt lamp vs. dehumidifier
Therefore, is it idea to use a salt lamp as a dehumidifier in place of a traditional dehumidifier? Can we compare the traditional dehumidifiers with the Himalayan salt lamps? Are there any advantages of one over the other? Let’s answer these questions.
Similarities
- Both a dehumidifier and a salt lamp are electrical devices.
- A salt lamp and a dehumidifier absorbs moisture from the indoor air
- Both a salt lamp and a dehumidifier are household appliances
Differences
First, we talk about the design. A Himalayan salt lamp is primarily designed to uplift your mood, relieve stress, and increase energy level through its pink amber glow. Whereas the primary function of a dehumidifier is to dehumidify your home. And dehumidifying is the secondary function of any salt lamp.
Second, a traditional dehumidifier is a boxed product with vents, filters, tanks etc. Whereas a salt lamp is simply a salt rock mined from the salt mines and carved in different shapes with a light bulb plugged inside for illumination.
Third, due to the mode of operation, the traditional dehumidifiers cover more space. They have a fan that blows cooler, and a drier that dries the indoor air. Whereas salt lamps can only remove moisture in the indoor environment.
Fourth, the dehumidifying capacity of a traditional dehumidifier is much more than that of a salt lamp. A traditional dehumidifier can remove 20% to 25% of the moisture in a room in a matter of hours, whereas a Himalayan salt lamp may not exceed 8% to 10%.
Thus, we can say that a Himalayan salt lamp is more or less a set of small pinkish salt rocks with light bulbs inside to illuminate the salt rocks!

Do salt Lamps Dissolve or Melt?
Many people ask this on Google – do salt lamps dissolve? Or do they melt? Why my salt lamp is melting, sweating, or leaking?
Yes and No. In “yes”, the only way for a salt lamp to dissolve is to place it in a large amount of water for a very long time – days or weeks. And, in “no”, it doesn’t dissolve if you see a wet surface. That’s only due to its moisture absorbing nature. And that disappears when you simple turn your salt lamp on! Its surface will become the same (smooth or rough) as it was before moisture.
Although a salt lamp doesn’t dissolve in water for a shorter sessions, do not wash your salt lamp directly with water or running water, or even in rain. Some salt crystals and other minerals escape from the lamp’s surface. But this doesn’t mean that you are losing enough salt to dissolve the salt lamp. This will only make your salt lamp’s surface uneven.
Hence, damaging to dissolving a salt lamp is, in fact, very difficult.

Why does table salt dissolve
faster than Himalayan Rock Salt?
Well, both table salt and Himalayan rock salt means Sodium Chloride (NaCl). And there is no difference in dissolving the sodium chloride in water if there is no difference in the temperature of the water you are using. Only the grind of the salt (grain size) affects the dissolving rate.
We all know that dissolution happens at the surface of the salt, or any material. If you grind a salt lamp into smaller pieces, the same amount of salt has now more surface. And thus dissolves faster.
Or, you can say it in a more simple way. The crystals (grains) of the table salt are much smaller than a Himalayan rock salt lamp. And we know that the speed of solving depends on the surface area of the salt (Smaller grains mean greater surface area); dissolution takes place at the surface area.
Large grains take longer to dissolve than smaller grains of the salt. Thus, a powdered salt dissolves millions time faster than a Himalayan salt lamp. Because a salt lamp has a very little surface area as compared to thousands of grains in a spoon of salt!
